Kids and the Dentist: When Should You Start?
Earlier than most parents think!
In New Zealand, it’s recommended that children have their first dental visit by their first birthday, or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing.
The good news is that these early visits are usually very simple. They’re less about treatment and more about:
- Checking teeth are developing properly
- Helping your child feel comfortable at the dentist
- Giving parents advice on brushing, teething, diet, and healthy habits
Starting early can also help prevent tooth decay, which is one of the most common health issues affecting Kiwi children.
Free Dental Care for NZ Children
In New Zealand, basic dental care is free for children and teenagers under 18 through the public oral health system.
Children are usually enrolled with the Community Dental Service, where they’ll receive regular check-ups and preventive care throughout childhood and adolescence.
Tips for Parents
- Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears
- Use a small smear of fluoride toothpaste
- Avoid sugary drinks in bottles or sippy cups
- Make dental visits positive and stress-free
Children who start dental visits early are often more relaxed and confident about dental care as they grow up. At Avonhead Dental, we aim to make every visit gentle, friendly, and fun for little smiles.
If you have questions about your child’s oral health, our team is always happy to help.
