Free Dental Care for Children and Teenagers (Under 18)
In New Zealand, children and teenagers can receive free basic dental care until their 18th birthday through the public oral health system funded by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora.
This programme helps ensure young people develop healthy teeth and lifelong oral health habits.
What Free Dental Care Includes
Free dental care for children and teenagers usually includes:
- Regular dental check-ups
- X-rays when required
- Teeth cleaning
- Fluoride treatments
- Fillings to treat tooth decay
- Fissure sealants to prevent cavities
- Tooth extractions when necessary
These services are provided through school dental clinics, community oral health services, and participating dental clinics.
Treatments Not Usually Covered
Some treatments are generally not included in the public programme, such as:
- Orthodontic treatment (braces)
- Cosmetic dental procedures
How to Enrol
Most children are automatically enrolled through the Community Oral Health Service when they start school.

Eligibility for Publicly Funded Dental Services

· Work visa holders with visas valid for 2 years or longer
