Free Dental Care for Children and Teenagers (Under 18)

In New Zealand, children and teenagers can receive free basic dental care until their 18th birthday through the public oral health system funded by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora.

This programme helps ensure young people develop healthy teeth and lifelong oral health habits.

What Free Dental Care Includes

Free dental care for children and teenagers usually includes:

  • Regular dental check-ups
  • X-rays when required
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Fillings to treat tooth decay
  • Fissure sealants to prevent cavities
  • Tooth extractions when necessary

These services are provided through school dental clinics, community oral health services, and participating dental clinics.

Treatments Not Usually Covered

Some treatments are generally not included in the public programme, such as:

  • Orthodontic treatment (braces)
